The University of Oxford China Centre
The Oxford China Centre brings together scholars from across the University in a remarkable collaboration between departments, libraries, colleges and museums.
As a physical space, the China Centre provides a superb new environment to stimulate Oxford’s world-class academics and students by encouraging original research, publications, joint projects and collaboration with scholars and institutions in China, the UK and elsewhere. Their location together in one building dedicated to the study of China provides new synergy between social scientists and humanists working on China. The subjects covered there range from the most cutting-edge social science on the social change, political economy and legal development of China to searching work on the traditional philosophy, literature and history of this millennia-long civilization.
The China Centre has been in its new home at the Dickson Poon Building for nearly four years, and in that time, the Centre’s wealth of activity have made it the most significant centre in Europe for the study of China. Yet more work remains to be done over the next years and decades. While the Centre’s “hardware” is permanently assured with the completion of the magnificent building, we need to ensure equal longevity for the “software” – the activities, courses and programmes that make up the Centre’s life, in which students, academics and prominent figures from the public, diplomatic and business world debate the most pressing issues to do with China’s rise in the world.
The Centre is immeasurably helped by the generous support of our donors who by donating are joining with us in advancing the study of China as it moves to the forefront of world affairs. Fostering mutual understanding between the world’s great cultures has always been a central part of Oxford’s historic mission. We hope you will step forth with us to help build a better world.
