Medical Sciences DPhil Hardship Fund

Today’s students are facing unprecedented challenges.

DPhil students are at the heart of Oxford's groundbreaking research. Their unrelenting hard work is driving forward significant transformations in the medical sciences.

However, funding packages that cover all years of doctoral study are scarce and the funding available from traditional sources has been more thinly spread in recent years.

Hardship bursaries are a huge help. But with very few currently available, we are urgently seeking support to provide more bursaries that will help students complete their studies.

The Medical Sciences DPhil Hardship Fund will make a big difference by providing immediate support to students who are at risk of being unable to continue with their studies.

Without support, many students are forced to delay or suspend their research.

Over 50 students withdraw from their studies for financial reasons every year.

That’s why your support is so important.

Especially as the students that are worst affected are often near the end of their studies and are needing help over the final hurdle.

My research – which aimed to improve dental access for homeless adolescents – faced significant delays following the Covid-19 pandemic and I was not able to complete it within my initial timeframe. My main source of research funding ended and I faced financial difficulty in meeting my living costs. A hardship award allowed me to focus on my studies with peace of mind. As a result, I’ve been able to continue my primary healthcare research for vulnerable populations that aims to address the social and health inequalities facing marginalised groups. I am incredibly grateful for the hardship support and would not be where I am without it.

Thank you for your support.
