What were you doing before you joined the Development Office?
I was working for a college in Banbury as a librarian and then later did some temping for the University, where I had worked a few years earlier in a different department.
Why did you move into higher education fundraising?
I used to work for the science department at the University and then moved to Canada with my wife for a while. I always enjoyed working for the University and this job in the Gift Registry came up as a temp role. I was lucky enough to get it and I really enjoyed it, then it became permanent. Fundraising was never something on my mind but I just fell into it.
What does a typical day look like, in brief?
In Gift Registry there’s not really such a thing as a typical day. There are certain jobs that you’ve always got to do, but you just have to prepare yourself for whatever comes in, whether it’s a huge donation or a query from the development office or a donor – there’s always something different.
What’s the best thing about working here?
I just really like the vibe. I’m part of a great team and I love being part of the University. Everyone is happy to be here and, seeing the generosity of people with all the donations that come in, it’s a lovely thing to be part of.
What has surprised you the most?
The sheer amount of generosity that I see every day. People are happily pledging a couple of hundred pounds a month, or £50 a week... it just blows my mind that so many alumni and people not even associated with the University are so happy to give to the University – that’s really surprising.
What is the biggest challenge?
In my particular role there are so many processes and so many things to get your head around that it was a steep learning curve.
What is the most special project you have worked on?
I went to see the Beecroft Building. I wasn’t heavily involved but I was processing a lot of donations for it and to go and see the building itself... isn’t it amazing?! The architecture, the stairs, the chalk boards – to see where the money has gone and to see the completed project... That was quite special to see.
Describe working in the Development Office in three words or short phrases.
Frantic, enjoyable, varied.
What would your super power be?
Teleportation. Imagine no more commutes, or you could go to any country. The downside would be that you’d probably put on weight from not moving around as much.
