The University’s charitable status
The objectives of the University of Oxford Development Trust Fund are to promote, assist and secure the advancement of education, learning, teaching, scholarship and research at or in connection with the University of Oxford, its colleges and societies.
The Trust Fund is administered by the University and was established for a special purpose in connection with the University. It is therefore an exempt charity for the purpose of charity legislation. As such, it has full charitable status; albeit it is exempt from the requirement to register as a charity with the Charity Commission, and therefore does not have a Charity reference number.
The University of Oxford (i.e. the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Oxford) has full charitable status. However, it is exempt from the requirement to register as a charity with the Charity Commission.
In the US residents can give to Oxford and its Colleges via Americans for Oxford, Inc. Americans for Oxford is the University's primary charitable organisation in North America, and has been determined by the United States Internal Revenue Service to be a tax-exempt public charity with 501(c)(3) status.
In Canada the University of Oxford is recognised by the Canadian Revenue Agency as a prescribed institution under Section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations. The University is able to issue gift receipts for Canadian tax purposes.
In Australia we encourage donors wishing to make a tax-deductible donation to support the Oxford Australia Scholarship Fund.
In China the University of Oxford China Office Limited is a registered charity under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance. The China Office is able to issue gift receipts for Hong Kong tax purposes.
